FOREWORD:
In their early days,
Metallica were at the forefront
of a new, yet uneard-of brutal metal
movement, along with the likes of Slayer
Anthrax, Megadeth, Dark Angel (to name but a few). That gave many of us not only goose bumps
but took us dangerously close to climaxes of the other kind... Unfortunatley, for me that was
only true until the release of "Ride The Lightning" that I had brought over from England right at the
time of its release (and it was only widely
available in the shops of continental
Europe some weeks (if not months)
later, would you believe it?)

Don't bother writing if you have nothing to offer.

The raving continues...
I can't tell you
how disappointed I
was with the effort, because
it carried clear signs of a band losing
all the characteristics I ever loved about it
(and I was still pretty alone in thinking so).
The albums that followed I merely thought
to be abominable (yet certainly more
acceptable for the general public,
that's the other - desired -
side of the coin)
and the
more
they
released,
the more disgusted
I was. If that wasn't enough,
the band started their sheer-legal-
force "piracy" lawsuit and even if I didn't
mind the consequences when it came to the
free downloading of officially released material
(I did and do indeed buy music if I like it!), it pretty
soon was clear that it also had an effect on the very
tape-trading circles that had once made Metallica what
they now were! Before we knew it, most "ROIO" material
(recordings of independent origin) of Metallica had disappeared
and it was hence close to impossible to get any home-made live recordings
or demos of the band (and it's so interesting to hear what a band sounds like live as opposed to commercial releases,
especially if you hadn't a chance to go and see it yourself!). To this day, Metallica are listed among those bands
that do not allow their fans to publicly circulate recordings of their music. Hearing from a close friend of
mine, who interviewed Metallica for a music magazine at the time, that a vinyl bootleg that a friend
had given him in order to have it autographed while he was doing the interview, was simply
"confiscated" during the process, did the rest. Eventually, I ended up paying no attention
at all to what Metallica did for some 25 years, until in 2009 I visited another friend
who happened to be listening to the band's latest release "Death Magnetic".
Gosh, was I surprised to hear that after all these years of "weakness"
they had effectively managed to come up with something, that in
parts carried the true metal spirit from the early days that I
once liked so much! Sure, it wasn't as generally brutal and
all-out as "Kill 'em All", but at least it aimed to please
a little less than usual, and that already is quite
something for a band with a history like Metallica.
I got a strong feeling that, In a way, they had
now started coming back from the
dead they were for such
a long time and
I am looking
forward
to hearing
what they will
do next... Btw., some
people obviously think Metallica
already were back with the release of
"St. Anger", but that's something I can't
confirm for myself. Listening to
the effort just recently,
I must say it's
pretty
much along
the lines of what
too many bands had
been for way too long:
Repetitive, somewhat
"sterile", generally
lacking melody, guitar
solos and inventiveness. Plus
I find, it (musically) focusses on the "hard times" we live in a little too much...
